The best Playing Surface score in the academy's history

The Arizona Diamondbacks DR Academy in Boca Chica scored 3.96 out of 4.00 on Playing Surface in its 2026 MLB evaluation — 22 of 23 items graded Excellent, and the highest mark the complex has recorded.

The 2026 result

  • 3.96 / 4.00 Playing Surface
  • 22 / 23 Excellent items
  • 4.00 Academy overall

On 26 August 2026 the Office of the Commissioner in Latin America evaluated the Arizona Diamondbacks Dominican Academy in Boca Chica. The Playing Surface section — the fields we maintain — closed at 3.96 out of 4.00.

Twenty-two of the section's twenty-three items were graded Excellent. The single item that scored a 3 was a plastic cap on a fence railing needing minor repairs: facility hardware, not turf.

The climb

  • 3.50 2018
  • 3.31 2019
  • 3.24 2022
  • 3.28 2023
  • 3.97 2025
  • 4.00 2026

The score is not a one-off. The academy's lowest evaluation was a 3.24 in 2022; it has risen in every cycle since, and 2026 is the first year the complex has reached the top of the scale.

What changed between those two numbers is the maintenance program behind the surface.

How it was done

The evaluation graded Public Areas a 4 and said so explicitly: the staff "closely follows their maintenance program and revises it weekly."

That is the whiteboard calendar — seasonal work broken down week by week, reviewed with the whole crew, marked off as it is completed. It is the same discipline described in how the team plans ahead.
